Hank Brown, R- Greeley, with tough questions rang- ing from world trade to social secu- rity reforms to drug enforcement laws at a town meeting held Saturday at Morgan Community College's Bloedorn Lecture Hall. B row n said that foreign aid to brace economic struggles was not a satis- factory solution to Poland and other Eastern European countries seeking sweeping political reforms. "In looking at our federal budget I don't see a lot of room for new for- eign aid," Brown said. Brown said he believes that coun- tries seeking to build new govern- ments could seek international mone- tary funds from the World Bank. Also, Brown said the countries would find greater strength if they could build independent funds through the private sector. Brown, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator he believed the federal government should continue fighting drug abuse, especially against drugs which trig- ger violent reactions. Brown said that even if America succeeded in sealing off drug trade ;along its borders, America would still have an abundance of drugs. "The real challenge will come when it is no longer socially acceptable to use drugs," Brown said. He said he believed that major drug dealers who directly cause a death to occur should be given the death pen- alty. - News-Tribune, March 7,1990 Schmidt found guilty on all four counts By Anthony Rayl YUMA--The Akron day-care cen- ter sexual assault case finally came to an end last week when former Yuma resident Philip Schmidt was found guilty on all four counts of molesting children at his grandmother's home. The jury, consisting of seven women and five men, deliberated for 7-1/2 hours before settling on their verdict Thursday. Sexual assault on a child is a Class-3 felony. Each count is punishable by up to 16 years in prison. Pueblo District Judge Dennis Macs set sentencing for April 12. The verdict closes the three-year case. It all began in 1987 when a two- year-old boy told his mother he had been molested by Schmidt at Hazel Riggs' day-care home in Akron. Two little girls from the center mid they were molested by Schmidt and his brother, Michael Schmidt. Michael Schmidt was found guilty on similar charges in Denver District Court last August and is serving a four-year prison sentence. Hazel Riggs pleaded guilty in September to giving false information to investiga- tors. She received a deferred sen- tence and has moved from Akron. - Pioneer, March 8, 1990 Rockwell Building William Armstrong, said he would IeXd"ee a constitdtionalaniend: laltds school bid merit fquiring the fleralgffVem - ' WRAY-c-If plans go according to mcnt to balance the federal budget. "We spend more money on th poor than any country in the history of the world, but yet that is only 15 percent of the national budget." he said. Brown said that responses from a recent survey of his constituents showed that 70 percent said they favored the balanced budget amend- ment. Another issue Brown tackled was the currentwaron drugs. Brown said schedule, Haigler Elementary stu- dents will startoffthe 1990-91 school year in a new school building. According to Doug Nollette, Su- perintendent of Schools for the Dundy County school system, a decision was made in 1985 when Haigler School and Dandy County School consoli- dated, to leave the elementary stu- dents in Haigler and build a new school. Bids for the new building were re- cently submitted by four bidders, including Rockwell Building Corpo- ration of Wray, who submitted the low bid of $313,221. Other bids included League Builders Supply of McCook, Nebr. for $342,000; Paulsen Building Supply of Cozad, Nebr. for $373,700; and Rhoade Construction of Goodland, Kans. for $379,000. During a board meeting Feb. 28, representatives of Rockwell Build- ing and school officials made some changes and adjustments to bring the bid down to just over $299,000. The new 5,700 square foot struc- ture, designed by Joseph Hewgley & Associates of North Platte, Nebr., will contain four classrooms, a li- brary and art area, a resource room, offices and restrooms. The bid provides for construction of the new building, demolition of the present classroom building and remodeling a iockerroom into a kitchen. The gym will remain in use. -Gazette, March 8, 1990 Three arrested for burglary, trespass AKRON---Officers of the Wash- ington County Sheriff's Office ar- rested three men, one from Akron, last week on charges of second de- gree burglary. Larry Martin Silvey of Russell Springs, Ken., 44; John Henry Marrs of Stafford, Ken., 49; and Herman Ray Jest of Akron, 62; were arrested Feb. 28 after a call was received at the Sheriff's office from an unidentified "concerned citizen," according to Sheriff Bill Wood. The caller said that a pickup had been spotted in the yard of an unoccupied house at 25946 Highway 63, about 15 miles south of Akron. On their arrival at the house, offi- cers found that a forced entry had been made into the house. It was also discovered that the lock to the kitchen door had been removed and replaced with a new lock. The pickup was later spotted by one of the deputies, and he and an- other deputy contacted the vehicle's occupants in a farm yard at 17201 County Road 33. Silvey, Marrs and Jest were ar- rested and taken to the Washington County jail in Akron. Silvey and Jest both said that Marrs had changed the lock on the kitchen door. Although the house and the land are currently tied up in federal bankruptcy court, Marrs claims to have leased the house from Coral Silvey. According to Washington County Sheriff Bill Wood, the house is leased by Leon Winenger of Ak- ron. - News-Reporter, March 8,1990 *148 6pack :1 l=1.38 .,,.c, I All PEPSI Products I I Only *1.49 6 pack This Week I = Kurtzer's 2WD Tractors 1978 John Deere 4840 Powershlft,18.4-42 duals, good mech. cond. 1982 IH 5488-18.4-42 duals, local owner 1982 IH 5288-20.8-38 duals, low hours 1982 IH 5088-18.4-38 duals, good mech. cond. 1975 Case 1370-18.4-38 duals, low hours John Deer 4020 w/Farmhand loader 4WD Tractors 1982 John Deere 8640-18.4-38 duals, low hours 1981 John Deere 8640-20.8-38 duals, good mech. cond. 1980 Versatile 555-700 hrs. on comp eng. o.h. 1980 IH 3788-18.4-38 duals-rear, low hours Tillage 27 ft. John attended elementary and high school in Haxtun, and graduated from Haxtun High in 1959. He received his degree in business administra- tion from the University of Colorado in Boulder. While he was in college he was influenced and became ac- tive in the ministry of Campus Cru- sade for Christ. After graduation from the Univer- sity, John entered the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ on a full time basis in Arrowhead Springs, Calif. He began a ministry with the youth wl-e at Arrowhead Springs. Later, John accepted an assignment as registrar for the Mexican Campus Crusade headquarters in Curnavaoa, Mex. He brought a young man, Fernando Sandoval, home to Haxtun with him from Mexico one summer, to stay with his family to learn Eng- lish. John completed his work in Mex- ico and returned to San Bernadino, Calif., where he continued his minis- try with young people. It was while he was working in San Bernadino that he met his wife Marilyn. They were married on December 27,1969 and shortly there- after left California to establish their new home in Gadsen, Alabama. John was high school director for Campus Crusade in Gadsen. Their son Eric was born on June 17, 1971 while they served in Alabama. The Bruce family left Gadsen in 1972 to work in Dallas for Campus Crusade's Explo 72. After Explo 72 John and his family left the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ and accepted the position of youth direc- tor of Ocean Beach Baptist Church in San Diego, Calif. John and his family moved to Phila- delphia in 1976 where John com- pleted his seminary training at East- em Baptist Seminary. Michael was born while they were living in Phila- delphia on November 1, 1978. After completing his seminary studies the family accepted the position of asso- ciate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Santa Barbara, Calif. In 1985 the family moved to San Francisco where he had ministered to the people of Sunset Baptist Church. A notation in John's bible reads as follows: "The test of a man's ministry is not popularity (Matt. 24:11), nor miraculous signs and wonders, (Matt. 24:24) but rather by his faithfulness to the Work of God (1 Tim. 4:6)". John died at home on Sunday, March 4, 1990. He was preceded in death by his mother Josephine who died on October 28, 1985 and his fa- ther Wallace who passed away on October 4, 1989. John is survived by his wife Mari- lyn, San Francisco, Calif.; his two sons Eric and Michael; his sisters Joan, Barbara and Carol; his brother Bob; and the many others who were touched by his life and ministry.
